Cheap Wines for the Soul

As a student on a budget I understand the struggle of finding good wine at a low price. Here are my three favorites for under $15.00.

My mother introduced me to Barefoot’s California Pinot Grigio during the fall of 2017. She claimed that it was a great introductory wine for those who don’t know much about wine. The translucent yellow wine offers an aroma of tart green apple, sweet honeysuckle, and pear. The first tastes of this light wine reveal notes of the same bright apple from its sent mixed with lemon. The closing notes have traces of fresh melon and peach. This wine reminds me of my time spent in Italy last summer. I think it would pair well with pasta, pizza, or seafood. At $10.95 a bottle from LCBO and the Wine Rack, this wine is well worth a try.

Kris’ 2008 Pinot Grigio is an Italian White Chardonnay. This sunny yellow wine carries a balmy essence of pear and nectarine with sweet blossom undertones. The first sip of this wine bares spicy tones. A strong tannin is left on the tongue from green apple. This smooth and dry wine leaves lasting notes of lemon. This Pinot Grigio has less sugar which may mean there is a smaller chance of waking up with a hangover the next day, however, I would not suggest drinking more than two glasses. Kris’ Pinot Grigio has a warm summer-like feel. I believe it would pair well with a lighter meal of salads, grilled vegetables, or fish. This is a go-to wine for a girls’ weekend at the cottage and at $12.00 a bottle, available at LCBO or on the Kris Wine website, you and each of your friends can pick up your own bottle.

Sogrape’s Vila Regia is made in Duoro Portugal. This extra dry wine gets its tannin from notes of black berry. This wine is laced with vanilla scents and middle notes of cedar and dried apricot. Vila Regia has a deep red color, medium body, and long earthy finish. I enjoy drinking this red wine on could winter nights and it pairs well with red meats and heavy soups. This bottle is only $8.25 at your local LCBO and is listed on LCBO’s 2018 “10 Under $10.95” list.
